Ronny Chieng is a Chinese stand-up comedian and actor born in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. His journey in comedy and entertainment has seen him straddle multiple cultures and continents. Raised in Manchester, New Hampshire, USA, and later in Singapore, Ronny experienced a rich tapestry of cultural influences that would later infuse his comedy with a unique perspective.
In pursuit of higher education, Ronny moved to Australia, where he attended the University of Melbourne. He graduated in 2009 with a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Commerce, but it was during this time in Melbourne that he discovered his passion for comedy. He began performing stand-up in 2009, quickly making a name for himself in the vibrant local comedy scene.
Ronny's talent and hard work soon propelled him onto the international stage. He embarked on four sold-out global stand-up comedy tours, performing in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, and London. His hilarious and insightful observations about culture and modern life resonated with audiences worldwide.
His rising star continued to shine as he was repeatedly invited to the prestigious Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal in 2012, 2013, and 2015. He made his US television debut on "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson" in 2015, marking an important milestone as he expanded his comedic reach to American audiences.
Throughout his career, Ronny has graced numerous acclaimed venues, selling out shows at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, SOHO Theatre in London, Largo Theatre in Los Angeles, the Sydney Opera House, Melbourne Town Hall, the Enmore Theatre in Sydney, the Esplanade Concert Hall in Singapore, and PJ Live Arts in Malaysia. His skill and charisma also earned him the honor of opening for legendary comedians Dave Chappelle and Bill Burr during their tours in Australia.
Ronny has also released four one-hour stand-up comedy specials: "The Ron Way" (2012), "Can You Do This? No You Can't." (2013), "Chieng Reaction" (2014), and "You Don't Know What You're Talking About" (2015). His work has been recognized with numerous awards and nominations, including Best Newcomer at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2012, the Directors' Choice Award at the same festival in 2014, and Best Show at the Sydney Comedy Festival 2014. He was also nominated for Best Comedy Release at the ARIA Awards in 2014 and 2015, along with nominations for Best Comedy Performer at the Helpmann Awards during the same years.
In 2015, Ronny made a significant move to New York City after being hired as a correspondent on "The Daily Show with Trevor Noah" on Comedy Central. His unique comedic voice and sharp wit quickly made him a standout performer on the show. Interestingly, during this period of transition, he also lost 11 kg, a feat unrelated to his burgeoning comedy career.
