Paul Reiser, a comedian known for his pleasant demeanor and inoffensive humor, was born in Manhattan. He attended the prestigious Stuyvesant High School and spent his evenings exploring the vibrant New York comedy club scene. After graduating with a B.A. in music from the State University of New York at Binghamton, he returned with a heightened interest in stand-up comedy, which he had begun performing at local venues.
Reiser divided his time between helping his father run the family's health food business and honing his comedic and acting skills. His persistence paid off when he auditioned for and secured a role in the 1982 cult classic "Diner." The early success raised hopes for Hollywood stardom, prompting his move to Los Angeles in 1983. However, substantial big-screen roles proved elusive, and Reiser often found himself in minor parts while his stand-up career progressed modestly.
In 1988, Reiser wrote and produced an HBO special titled "Out on a Whim." Although the special was whimsical, it did not make a significant impact. During this time, he also co-starred in the sitcom "My Two Dads," which, despite challenges, ran for three years. This experience set the stage for his breakout role in the beloved sitcom "Mad About You," where he played Paul Buchman alongside Helen Hunt. The show offered a humorous and relatable look into the life of an American couple. Reiser reflected on the show's appeal, stating, "Marriage is like the final frontier of intimacy. It's a dance with constantly changing ground rules, full of never-ending stories and issues. We want it to be honest, so that people will say, 'God, that's just like my life!'"
Throughout the run of "Mad About You," Reiser expanded his repertoire by authoring best-selling books like "Couplehood," drawing from his experiences in marriage to his wife, Paula. They welcomed a son, Ezra, which inspired a follow-up book, "Babyhood." However, Reiser chose not to feature his son on the book's cover, jokingly remarking, "I didn't want to hear, 'What's the matter with that kid?' Bring some other baby."
Beyond acting, Reiser wore multiple hats as co-writer, co-creator, and co-executive producer of "Mad About You," earning more than $10 million annually by the show's conclusion. He also co-wrote the show's theme song and continues to receive royalties from it. Paul Reiser's multifaceted career in comedy and television, marked by both creativity and business acumen, ensured his lasting success in the entertainment industry.
