Leslie Jones, a dynamic force in the world of comedy, was born in Memphis, Tennessee. Her journey took a pivotal turn when her father relocated the family to Los Angeles to work at Stevie Wonder’s radio station, KJLH, as an electronic engineer. Leslie attended high school in Lynwood, where she played basketball primarily to appease her father, appreciating the perks of free shoes and the opportunity to skip classes. Basketball also opened doors, earning her a scholarship first to Chapman University in Orange County. When her coach moved to Colorado State University, she followed, eager for independence and a stocked refrigerator.
While at Colorado State, Leslie discovered her comedic talent by winning the “Funniest Person on Campus” contest. This newfound recognition fueled her dreams of stardom. Returning to Los Angeles, she braved the stage at the World Famous Comedy Store but faced a rough initiation. Undeterred by a performance that led to an explosive bomb followed by nausea outside, she continued to pursue stand-up, opening for Jamie Foxx and confronting harsh audiences with limited material.
Balancing various day jobs, from UPS worker to receptionist, Leslie’s nights were spent honing her craft on the comedy circuit in Los Angeles. Her perseverance began to pay off, as her natural flair and theater background earned her roles in TV shows like In the House, Malcolm and Eddie, and commercials. She was determined to be a standout woman in comedy, amidst the dominance of male performers.
Her big break came with the "Just for Laughs" Montreal Comedy Festival and subsequently landing a role in Martin Lawrence’s National Security. Leslie's performances extended to Comedy Central’s Premium Blend and BET’s The Way We Do It, with appearances at the Aspen Comedy Festival and Comedy Central’s Laffapalooza. Her relentless drive won her the national and regional Bacardi By Night Comedy Tour.
Leslie’s unmistakable energy and physical comedy are influenced by her athletic background in collegiate basketball, running, and swimming. She has graced stages internationally, including Showtime at the Apollo, BET’s Comicview, and HBO’s Def Comedy Jam. The latter, a personal achievement, signified her arrival in the comedy world.
With features in VIBE magazine and films like Master P’s Repos, Leslie Jones remains a vibrant presence in comedy, known for her unapologetic humor and bold stage presence. Her story is a testament to the commitment required in comedy, driven not just by talent but by an unyielding passion for making people laugh.
