Jonah Ray, with his distinctive perpetual stubble and hipster glasses, is a defining figure in the Los Angeles alternative comedy scene. Born in Kailua, Hawaii, on the island of Oahu, Ray's journey to comedy was initially rooted in music. He played in a punk rock band before moving to Los Angeles, with aspirations of breaking into the music industry. In LA, he seamlessly transitioned to sketch and stand-up comedy writing, a move that would shape his career.
Ray's comedic voice is heavily influenced by his passion for geek and music culture. Like his frequent collaborator, Chris Hardwick, Jonah wears his nerd credentials with pride, integrating them into his comedic material. His early career saw him working as a writer on shows such as G4’s "Web Soup," E!’s "The Soup," and Current’s "SuperNews!" Ray also became a regular performer at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater, honing his craft.
Throughout his career, Ray has recorded two notable hour-long specials: 2006’s “This is Crazy Mixed-up Plumbing” and 2012’s “Hello, Mr. Magic Plane Person, Hello.” He further established himself in the comedy scene by co-hosting "The Meltdown with Kumail Nanjiani," a popular comedy showcase performed in the basement of Meltdown Comics in LA. This showcase was later adapted into a Comedy Central program in 2014, featuring a variety of Los Angeles stand-up legends such as Maria Bamford, Todd Glass, and Marc Maron.
Ray gained further acclaim as a co-host of Hardwick’s "The Nerdist Podcast," which eventually spawned a television show. In 2014, Ray expanded his creative pursuits by launching "Literally Figuratively Records," a record label aimed at producing hybrid comedy and music albums.
A long-time fan of "Mystery Science Theater 3000," Ray saw his dream come true when he became the host of the revived series, "Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return," on Netflix in 2017, with the support of the show's original host, Joel Hodgson. Ray’s role as the captain of the Satellite of Love was a major milestone in his career, bringing his unique blend of humor and geek culture to a beloved franchise.
