Gary Owen has been entertaining American audiences for more than a decade with his side-splitting comedy. Known as one of America's most beloved comedians, Owen has captivated audiences with his unique comedic style and charm. Ebony magazine has noted him as Black America's "Favorite White Comedian," a testament to his broad appeal across diverse audiences.
Owen's comedic journey began in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he grew up with a passion for making people laugh. After high school, he joined the US Navy and was selected for the prestigious Presidential Honor Guard. Following his ceremonial duties, he served as a military police officer at the Naval Installations on Coronado Island in San Diego. It was during this time that he returned to his true calling: stand-up comedy. His talent quickly shone through, and after only a year of performing, he was named "Funniest Serviceman in America." This accolade led to appearances on the multicultural comedy showcase "BET's ComicView," where he impressed audiences enough to earn his own one-hour "grandstand" show. By the end of the season, he was selected from the year’s four "grandstanders" to be the host.
Owen's success extends beyond the stand-up stage. He has performed to sold-out audiences in major comedy clubs and theaters across the country. In addition to his live performances, he stars in the BET docuseries “The Gary Owen Show,” which provides a glimpse into his dynamic and interracial family life with his wife and children in small-town Ohio. His comedy special "I Got My Associates" aired on Showtime in 2017, showcasing his comedic prowess to viewers nationwide.
On the big screen, Owen has had substantial success as a comic actor. He starred alongside Mike Epps and Mike Tyson in the comedy "MEET THE BLACKS" and is a familiar face in the popular Screen Gems’ franchise "THINK LIKE A MAN" (2012) and its sequel "THINK LIKE A MAN TOO" (2014). Both films opened at number one at the box office and were warmly received by critics and fans alike. In 2014, Owen appeared in the Universal comedy "RIDE ALONG" with Ice Cube and Kevin Hart. His other film credits include roles in "LITTLE MAN" (2006) opposite The Wayans Brothers, and "DADDY DAY CARE" (2003) with Eddie Murphy, as well as his standout role as “Bearcat” in the MGM film "COLLEGE" (2008).
On the small screen, Owen co-hosted TruTV’s sketch series “Upload with Shaquille O’Neal” (2013) and played Zach the barber on the TBS comedy series “Tyler Perry’s House of Payne.” His televised stand-up specials, including "I Agree With Myself" and "True Story," both aired on Showtime in 2015, generating enthusiastic responses from audiences. He also hosted "Shaquille O'Neal Presents: All Star Comedy Jam - Live from Orlando" in 2014, further solidifying his reputation in the world of comedy.
In addition to his entertainment career, Owen is deeply involved with the nonprofit Facing Addiction, an organization dedicated to finding solutions to the addiction crisis in America. Having lost his own brother to heroin addiction, Owen frequently speaks and performs to raise awareness and support for the organization’s mission.
Gary Owen currently resides in Ohio with his wife, Kenya, and their three children, continuing to entertain and inspire audiences everywhere.
