Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement are the comedic duo behind Flight of the Conchords, known for their whimsical musical comedy. The two first crossed paths as flatmates while studying film and theatre at Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand. Prior to the formation of Flight of the Conchords, Bret and Jemaine participated in a five-man sketch show called So, You're a Man. The show enjoyed sell-out performances in New Zealand, prompting them to perform at the Melbourne Comedy Festival. However, the response in Melbourne was less enthusiastic, and they returned home after a week. In 1998, Bret and Jemaine decided to form a duo, initially calling themselves Moustache. As they began to develop more material, they changed their name to Flight of the Conchords, inspired by a humorous brand name associated with their flat's toilet. Over the next two years, they crafted twelve original songs and began gaining traction by performing regularly, both domestically and internationally. Their talent led them to comedy festivals in Canada and Edinburgh. In 2005, the duo performed at the HBO Comedy Festival in Aspen, catching the attention of the network. HBO was impressed and invited them to record a half-hour special for the revived "One Night Stand" series. This marked the beginning of a fruitful relationship with HBO, eventually resulting in their own sitcom. In this series, Bret and Jemaine portrayed fictionalized versions of themselves as struggling musicians in New York City, interspersed with creative music videos showcasing their songs. The show featured several notable alt-comedy figures such as Kristen Schaal, Eugene Mirman, Todd Barry, and Demetri Martin. Recently, Bret and Jemaine reunited to perform with Dave Chappelle as part of Funny or Die's Oddball Comedy Festival, showcasing the enduring appeal of their unique brand of humor and music.
